Hannibal
I have not yet read the book. I hadn't wanted to make mental
comparisons throughout the film like I had during Silence of the Lambs. So I can't tell you how true to the book this is - but I can say that I thoroughly enjoyed every grisly minute. Even
while I was wondering what I was doing in the theater scaring myself. The film wasn't as scary as I had thought, although it was really disgusting during some scenes. (I had to cover my
ears as much as my eyes in some parts.) But it was a very well spun psychological thriller that kept me nearly on edge throughout.
Julianne Moore was awesome as Clarice. (Jodi who?) And Anthony Hopkins was superb as ever. But it was Gary Oldman as Mason that completely blew
me away. I am convinced that Oldman is one of the best actors on screen today. He transforms himself completely in every movie I've seen him in.
But back to the movie. You may want to see Silence of the Lambs (if you haven't already) prior to seeing this. It helps you understand the relationship
between Clarice and Hannibal. The underlying psychology and energy took the story places I had not expected. A few scenes were predictable, but the
film was not. (I am so glad I hadn't read the book yet.) I can't wait for the next one. :)
