K-19: The Widowmaker
Starring: Harrison Ford, Liam Neeson, Joss Ackland, J.J. Field, Lex Shrapnel
Directed by: Kathryn Bigelow
Distributor: Paramount Pictures
Starring Harrison Ford and Liam Neeson in a movie based on a true story which could only be told after the Berlin wall came down. Both of these actors where brilliant in their roles. The sub seems doomed before it sets out to sea with 10 men dying whilst getting her ready, a ship's doctor who gets sea sick and a champagne bottle which refuses to break during the christening. Bad luck is seen at every turn.
In 1961 the Russians set out to show America that it was capable of a nuclear war. Problem being that the submarine they chose for the mission was full of defects and not quite ready for a voyage out to sea and the captain was more loyal to his country than his men.
There are tense moments in this movie as the nuclear reactor malfunctions when the valves blow and the captain pushes his men and the sub to their limits.
A long movie, but well worth seeing. Some people calling for war may need to see this movie as a wake-up call to see the destruction nuclear weaponry can cause.
